The title “Secret Wars” is inspired by two significant Marvel Comics storylines. The original 1984 series depicted an entity known as the Beyonder transporting numerous heroes and villains to a patchwork planet called Battleworld, compelling them to battle for his amusement. A 2015 reboot of the series delved into the collapse of the Marvel Multiverse, leading to a new Battleworld formed from the remnants of various universes.
While Marvel Studios has been tight-lipped about the film’s plot, it’s anticipated that the MCU’s “Secret Wars” will draw elements from both comic iterations. Given the MCU’s recent exploration of the multiverse in films like “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” it’s plausible that “Secret Wars” will further investigate the consequences of multiversal incursions. The concept of incursions—events where universes collide, leading to their mutual destruction—has already been introduced, hinting at a potential convergence of multiple realities.
Michael Waldron, known for his work on “Loki” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” has been tapped to write the screenplay for “Avengers: Secret Wars.” The Russo brothers, who previously directed “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame,” are set to return to helm this ambitious project.
While the official cast list remains under wraps, fans can expect appearances from key MCU characters. Benedict Cumberbatch has confirmed that Doctor Strange will play a significant role in “Secret Wars,” following his absence in “Avengers: Doomsday.” Additionally, with the introduction of characters like the Fantastic Four and X-Men into the MCU, there’s potential for a star-studded ensemble that spans the franchise’s extensive roster.
